Skysleep Interference Works was recorded on and off through May to December 2023. Earlier in the year, while randomly browsing on youtube, I stumbled across a video of something that took me by surprise.

A common thing for many people are memories of things we saw on TV as kids and we often spend the following years trying to find out what they were, with only vague clues or memories to go on. This was the case for me. A memory of a black and white hand-drawn animated intro to some spooky show, shown on the BBC in the 1980's.

I was too young to watch the show but the intro always stuck in my head, along with memories of the house I was in, the surroundings. All of a sudden, here was the show, as a random suggestion in my youtube feed. Without warning, I was watching the intro after so many years of wondering if I had just imagined it. It was a sudden powerful moment.

The actual show was not what I thought it was at all but the intro was extremely close to how I remembered it. After the loss of a loved one this year, memories and nostalgia were very present in the family and carried over to my dreams and in my every day life. I was thinking a lot of how memories coalesce and how often we have false or distorted memory of the past.

As the album developed through the year, the influence of how these vague recollections of things can suddenly manifest in a different way later made its way into the sound and as an album, styles and atmospheres throughout it started to change, hopefully leaving the listener with more to discover on subsequent re-listens.
